Tuesday Tune ~ The Health Benefits of Dancing.

Welcome to Natasha in Oz and welcome to this week's #TuesdayTune party! It is a rainy, cold and miserable day here in Brisbane and it has been like this all week; so much for Spring Down Under! I haven't been able to go for my walks, the kids have got cabin fever and, as much as I would like to sit here all day and blog, I think I need to get moving!

It's time to dance!
Tuesday Tune ~ I Feel Like Dancing!

Do you secretly boogie across your living room when you're home alone or embarrass your kids by grooving along to their favourite tunes in front of their friends? Well, if you do, keep it up! Not only is dancing a great way to let loose and have fun, but it also provides some fantastic benefits for your health!

Did you know that the Mayo Clinic researchers reported that dancing helps to reduce stress, increase energy, improve strength, increase muscle tone and increase your coordination? (Source)

Whether music you dance to, the American Heart, Lung and Blood Institute says that dancing can strengthen the bones of legs and hips, help people manage their weight, decrease blood pressure, and lower the risk of coronary heart disease.

Dancing provides the heart-healthy benefits of an aerobic exercise while also allowing you to engage in a social activity. This is especially stimulating to the mind, and one 21-year study published in the New England Journal of Medicine even found dancing can reduce the risk of Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia in the elderly.

In the study, participants over the age of 75 who engaged in reading, dancing and board games once a week had a 7 percent lower risk of dementia compared to those who did not. Those who engaged in these activities at least 11 days a month had a 63 percent lower risk! Neurologist Joe Verghese, believes that this is because "dance music engages the dancer's mind."

Not only does dancing increase blood flow to the brain, but the social aspect of the activity also leads to less stress, depression and loneliness. Furthermore, dancing can also require memorizing steps and working with a partner, both of which provide mental challenges that are crucial for brain health.

Nobody cares if you can't dance well.  Just get up and dance!  Dave Barry

Dancing can elevate our mood by raising our endorphin levels. This naturally-occurring hormone heals stress and cures depression. Because dancing makes our mind and body work in harmony, it gives us a sense of well-being. Source

So what's stopping you? Get up and have a dance!

  18. Hello! I have an award for you on my blog!

  19. To my surprise, a few years ago my daughter had me show her and some friends how to do the twist, jitterbug, mash potato, and waltz.
Yes, I have been known to drape a hand towel through the ice box handle and jitterbug.
This old lady even took some tap dancing lessons just for the fun of it.

  20. I dance around my house all the time and I don't have to be alone to do it. My music and my kids music are one and the same, I like the current stuff...so I crank up the music whenever I want to get a little energy.

  24. A happy happy post, Natasha. These photos are adorable, made me smile. Now that song You should be dancing, is stuck in my head, will think of you many times today >^_^<
Have a lovely evening, it's early early morning in my corner, off to prepare breakfast and get my little monkeys to school. xxx

  25. What beautiful pictures! I loved this post. I've always loved dancing - ever since I was 17 and attending a girl's private school. The local military college needed a list of phone numbers of willing dance partners. I signed up and after the first blind date was lucky enough to continue going to military dances and balls for about 3 years. They had a real military band playing, a beautiful ballroom, dinner at midnight in the castle...now I dance in the kitchen as I'm waiting for dinner to cook in the oven and the farmer to come home from the field!

  26. I'm sorry I missed this tag along.Your post about dancing relieving stress is so true.

My son hates when I start dancing. He laughs so hard because I dance funny on purpose. lol

  27. Oh, I love to dance. Nobody does it as well as they did in the old movies! I will have to come up with a song for Christmas. I forget Sunday's are for songs!
    Thanks for stopping by.

  28. Natasha can you let me know when the link is up for Sunday Song for the 17th Thanks xx
Hope the fact you have not posted yet (Sunday 11am Italian time)is not because you are still having weather problems.
