#TuesdayTune ~ Carly Simon and New York!

Hello friends and welcome to this week's #TuesdayTune Linky Party!

I have had New York on my mind a lot lately. You see, next month I turn 39 (AARRGGHHH) so that means next year I turn 40 (double AARRGGHH!!!). Well, I have been thinking about how I would like to celebrate this milestone and I am thinking that I would like to take a trip to my most favourite city in the world....

NEW YORK!

I love everything about New York...the people, the smells, the shopping, the buildings....Everything!

You come to New York to find the ambiance that will evoke your best. You do not necessarily know precisely what that might be, but you come to New York to discover it.

I remember the first time I fell in love with New York. It was 1988, my final year in High School and I had heard about a new movie starring Melanie Griffith, Sigourney Weaver, Joan Cusack and the gorgeous Harrison Ford. It was called "Working Girl" and the tagline was For anyone who's ever won. For anyone who's ever lost. And for everyone who's still in there trying.

Well, I saw the film and I loved it! It is the story of a secretary, Tess McGill (played by Grifith), who is from Staten Island and she works in the mergers and acquisitions department of a Wall Street investment bank. She recently earned a bachelor's degree in Business by attending college at night and her goal is to move out of the secretarial pool and into an executive position. When her boss, Katharine Parker (played by Weaver), breaks her leg skiing, Tess uses her absence and connections, including Parker's boyfriend Jack Trainer (Ford), to put forward her idea for a merger deal, an idea which had originally been stolen by Parker. Tess eventually gains the upper-hand and wins her dream job and her dream man.

The film was so fabulous for so many reasons but one of the things I particularly loved was the music, including the opening scene which follows Manhattan-bound commuters on the Staten Island Ferry. The sequence is accompanied by Carly Simon's song "Let the River Run", for which she received the Academy Award for Best Song.

“The opening sequence was so grand with its images of the Hudson River, the Statue of Liberty and the gleaming steel buildings that it seemed to call up a Walt Whitman feel. …I looked through ‘Leaves of Grass’ [Whitman's famous poem] and though I couldn’t find what I wanted, the poetry helped me get toward the feeling I wanted. From the beginning, I thought it should be a hymn with a jungle beat. To me, there was something very grand yet jungle-like about the story of these naive secretaries going every day into the Wall Street jungle.” Source

The song peaked at No. 49 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 11 on the Adult Contemporary chart. Simon and the song also won an Oscar for Best Song of the year, a Golden Globe for best original song (1989), and a Grammy for best song written for a motion picture or television (1990).
