This week I have been trying to find some more ideas for reusable cloth bags for my weekly shopping trips. I have been trying very hard to stop using plastic bags and have a few bags that I always use but they are starting to look a bit tired. My favourite bag is this cloth Cath Kidston bag which I use for small shopping trips. It folds up nicely and it looks pretty too!
Why use cloth bags for shopping in the first place?
Well, here are my top 5 Reasons why we should all use re-useable bags for shopping!
Well, here are my top 5 Reasons why we should all use re-useable bags for shopping!
- Plastic is the largest source of ocean litter. About 100,000 whales, seals, turtles and other marine animals are killed by plastic bags each year worldwide, according to Planet Ark, an international environmental group.
- A plastic shopping bag can take anywhere from 15 to 1000 years to decompose. In a compressed landfill, deprived of atmosphere to help them biodegrade, paper bags don't fare much better.
- Ireland, the first European country to impose a tax on them, has decreased plastic shopping bag consumption by 90% since 2002, reducing overall plastic bag usage by 1.08 billion.
- According to the Wall Street Journal, only 1% of plastic bags are recycled world-wide; the rest are left to live on indefinitely in landfills.
- Reusable bags come in all sorts of stylish designs, making your shopping trips a little less routine and a lot more fun! (Source)

Who would have thought that being Green could also be so stylish and fashionable!
Over a lifetime, use of reusable bags by just one person would save over 22,000 plastic bags. Isn't that even enough incentive to make the change and go green when shopping? It's only a small thing to do but it can make such a big difference!
Now, since this post is all about being Green I thought I'd share one of the very first songs that I know of that is dedicated to looking after our environment.
Hey farmer, farmer,
Put away the DDT now;
Give me spots on my apples,
But leave me the birds and the bees—
Please!
Don't it always seem to go,
That you don't know what you've got
Till it's gone—
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot!
So, what have you been up to on your blogs this week? Have you posted any songs on your blog lately? I would love it if you could share your favourite posts at this weekend's

ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful selection of tote bags, Natasha! Some are more stylish than the purses I usually carry. Now if I could only remember to BRING THEM into the STORE with me! I always forget.
ReplyDeleteI have a question about Pininterest, if you don't mind. Does the person whose photo someone "pins" up on their page get asked FIRST if they WANT their picture used? What about copyright laws? I have not yet joined it yet but I've been peeking & I don't always see proper credit given, like you did on your totes.
Thanks for any advice on the subject.
Hugs,
Rett
Love the shopping bags you featured, especially the won with the bumblebee! I agree, I much prefer to use recylable bags. I find that I can fit so many more groceries in the bags than plastic ones and they're easier to carry when you arrive home. Have a wonderful weekend, my friend! :)
ReplyDeleteLove Joni Mitchell!
ReplyDeleteNatasha, I make a point to use my own shopping bags when I can. It does make a difference.
ReplyDeleteReading Rett's comment, I've had some of the same questions about "pinning." Hope you can help us with this.
Enjoy the weekend. ~ sarah
That is an interesting question ladies! I'm not an expert in Copyright laws so I have no idea about the answer but I do know that Pinterest has a page about the issue of copyright: http://pinterest.com/about/copyright/
ReplyDeleteWhen I post something to my blog that I have pinned I embed it so that the all the details of the picture and the source show up on the bottom of the picture. When you first click the picture you are sent to my pinboard and then when you click on the picture again it takes you directly to the site where it came from.
Sorry I can't help any more than this.
Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment!
Best wishes,
Natasha.

90% I use reusable bags for my shopping!
I always carry one in my bag!
Have a nice weekend!
From all the great selections you shared, there should be a bag for us all. We are big here on recycling.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you on reusable shopping bags. I have been using them for several years now and have a colorful washable assortment I carry to the grocery, etc. I always get compliments on them. Love the ones you show us. :) HPS
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful are all of these! Love the Paris bag. We are enjoying summer so I do not have a post to join this time, but I will take a peek through the posts that have linked up.
ReplyDeleteAnd on the pinterest comment, I too have noticed that many of the photos on there are not sourced correctly so you may want to check that the source takes you to the original site the photo comes from before grabbing the embed code.
This is such fun! I can't wait to follow some of the links! I love music...and I use green bags, too! We carry everything in bags! I like to make them, too! Enjoy your weekend! I'm already singing! ♥
ReplyDeleteThanks for this suggestion Jessa Irene. It's so good we learn from each other like this!
ReplyDeleteLike most people I assumed the best option for putting pinned pictures on my blog was to use the embed code but if the original sources aren't always correct then I guess I will have to stop re-pinning other people's pins and just pin my own. I will have to be vigilant!
Take care and enjoy your summery weekend!
Natasha.

I love this post!! Have been shopping with cloth bag for a long time now. Funny thing is that I always did in Switzerland. Then when I moved here I felt so out of place bringing my own bag that I accepted the plastic (bad I know)..., then a couple of years ago (finally) stores began to promote the cloth bags. It's really not hard to do, lol.
ReplyDeleteI, too, am unsure about pinning. I mean, I don't think there's anything to worry about as far as copyrights..not sure, tho.
ReplyDeleteMy question is how to embed where the original photo came from.? I probably am doing it all wrong....
Hi BJ. We are having some great discussions here in the comments! If you want a pictorial tutorial on all things Pinterest (eg how to join, how to re-pin, how to organise your pin boards and how to embed) this site has all of the answers! It's brilliant.

Thanks for commenting on my blog and inviting me to have a look! What a beautiful blog you have!
ReplyDeleteWe have to use reusable bags as well here now, a good thing!
ReplyDeleteI loved seeing all of these on Pinterest, and now reading your comments here. Got to say, I love that Harrod's bag, and I haven't seen that one yet!
ReplyDeleteNatasha~ OMG!!! How much fun did I have doing this!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you!
Your post is fantastic...and I love this entire concept!
Hugs~

I've just found your beautriful blog and am now happily following xx Ava
ReplyDeleteThis is a lovely post, Natasha! I have a thing for bags, especially tote bags. The bloomingdale and Harrods are my favorites.
ReplyDeleteLove to you, have a grand new week ahead xx
I saw this post over on Pink Saturday and rushed right over to forever21 and ordered the Paris tote...lol...now I am doing a post for this link up and ...duh...it is the same one...lol...
ReplyDeletePS where did you get your pink pinintrest button for your side bar? I need that!
ReplyDeleteAll those beautiful bags! I love my cloth bags (even thought they are not nearly as pretty as these!) Maybe I should make some pretty ones!
ReplyDeleteI love how creative the cloth bags have gotten - I've acquired so many cool ones I now might have too many...but seeing these makes me want to get more 'cooler' ones! ;)
ReplyDeleteThanks for hosting this fun hop, Natasha - I still need to get busy pinning! :) Oh, and you don't have to follow the theme on MMMM - you're welcome to link up any time when you have music, theme or no theme! :)
Harper Valley PTA isn't the Girl Next Door but Don't Forget to Remember Me
Amen to your suggestion we use totes.
ReplyDeleteI have 4 LandsEnd/LL Bean totes, all over 15 years old, that I keep in the back of my PT. I never go into a store without at least one of these. I wash them quarterly and air dry.
Mine aren't as pretty as yours, but I feel good using them instead of those woosy and environment unfriendly plastic bags.
yay Joni! another Canadian !!
ReplyDeletei luved the market bags we had from stores in the UK - rough burlap with some colourful + cute ladybugs stamped onto them - lined - large enough to carry stuff + attractive ")
Love all of these tote bags. I would be happy to carry any one of them on my arm to do the grocery shopping. Not sure why people don't recycle their plastic bags when stores make it such an easy thing to do... Seeing them lying on the side of the road just makes me MAD.

Hi Natasha,
ReplyDeleteI love your shopping bag idea! I see the plastic bags blowing all over town. They blow down my street and get stuck in trees! I am going to switch. You have a fabulous post here on this topic! I have a pinning and singing party in draft to join you. I have the song but not the pins.Lol
I need to go browsing my pins. I love pinning, it is addictive! Thanks for linking it to Home Sweet Home!
Sherry
Hi Natasha! Love your choice of bags, especially the Moroccan Market bag and Harrods. Listening to Joni Mitchell sure brings back memories! Glad you picked that one. I asked for an invitation on your Pinterest sight - how long do you usually have to wait? I got an email from some guy that sounded kinda like - "get in line!" LOL! Oh, well, patience is a virture.
ReplyDeleteI'll post something here in a bit.
XoXoXo

A girl can never have too many totes and if they are green ... all the better!
