Beach Therapy or Thalassotherapy at Mooloolaba Beach in Australia and the Say G'Day Linky Party

Welcome dear friends to this week's Say G'day Saturday Linky party! I'm so thrilled that you have visited today!

This week I have had the beach on my mind...I have just returned from the most relaxing holiday at my favourite seaside destination, Mooloolaba! This place is truly our second home!

We had the most wonderful time while we were there and I feel so relaxed and ready to face another school term next week!

I found time to share a few pictures on instagram too. Here's a few of my favourites!

I even had a haircut and colour while I was there!

We all had such a great holiday-I love going to the beach!

I am sure that when many people think about the beach, they think about relaxing holidays, the sound of waves crashing on the shore and swimming in the surf. These are some of the very same things that I love about the beach and are only just a few of the reasons why I try to visit the seaside as often as I can. It never ceases to amaze me how fabulous I feel after a week away at the beach. I always seem to be a calmer, happier and better person when I am by the sea!

“I have always loved the beach. The smell of the salty water, the wind in my face, the gentle roar of the waves all combine to create a sense of peace and calm.” Anonymous

As soon as we arrive at the beach our family has a routine that we always seem to follow. We quickly unpack our bags, open all of the windows to let the salty air into rooms and we head straight down to the water. As soon as our toes hit the sand, the four of us seem to be instantly transported to another time and place. It is as though I can hear a great big collective “sigh” when we arrive because we are all so happy to be by the sea!

We then swim in the salty water, walk along the shore, go beachcombing and enjoy being in the fresh air!

At the end of a long day at the beach we head home and we feel relaxed yet completely energized.

“The Sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever.” Jacques Cousteau.

I know that I am not the only one who loves the beach! I am sure that many of us love the ocean because of its therapeutic effects. Many academics, specialists and therapists would say that being by the sea is healthy for the mind, body and heart and they would be right! Scientists have actually studied the positive effect of sea water for years and there is a term for the use of sea water as therapy; Thalassotherapy. (Natural Standard, 2010

Thalassotherapy (from the Greek word thalassa, meaning "sea") is the medical use of seawater as a form of therapy. The properties of seawater are believed to have beneficial effects upon the pores of the skin.

Thalassotherapy was developed in seaside towns in Brittany, France during the 19th century. (Wikipedia) It has been said that the father of modern medicine, Hippocrates, would send his patients to the ocean to soak in the salty sea water to help absorb the healing trace elements through the skin. At the same time his patients would be breathing in iodine as it’s carried along in the air molecules into their lungs.

Thalassotherapists have since studied the minerals, trace elements and micro-organisms found in sea water and they found magnesium, potassium, calcium, sodium, and iodine. Magnesium is healing because when it has been absorbed it helps to calm the body’s nerves. It also has antiseptic qualities! (Mulholland, 2010) Calcium, magnesium & phosphorus are important minerals to help building and maintain strong bones and teeth. Potassium regulates moisture in the skin and the chemical makeup of sea water is similar to human blood which means that osmosis can easily occur and therefore the body’s cells and the sea water exchange minerals. This results in the release of toxins from the body and the easy absorption of magnesium, postassium and calcium into the pores of the skin. The benefits of this trans-dermal osmosis are plenty, including increased blood circulation and pore rejuvenation. (Natural Home Remedies

“Our memories of the ocean will linger on, long after our footprints in the sand are gone.” Anonymous

Now, don’t think that you can only gain the benefits of sea water by swimming in the ocean. Iodine, which helps to regulate the thyroid gland for a healthy metabolism, is absorbed into the skin via the gas molecules in the ocean mist!

No wonder I always feel so refreshed and rejuvenated after going to the beach!

Just remember, next time you think you need to buy some multi-vitamins or an expensive moisturizer, why not take a walk along the beach or a dip in the ocean instead? Thalassotherapy is healthy, therapeutic and best of all it’s free!

So, what helps you feel fresh and rejuvenated?
Do you like long beach walks and happy times in the sun?

Maybe you enjoy spending time with your family hiking in the mountains?

Maybe you find comfort in your craft room or kitchen? I would love to hear about the ways that you relax and unwind!

  17. We never go on vacation, or haven't in the last 20 years.
But I live a block from the Bay, so I can walk there anytime.
I could never live anywhere but near the beach.
My little gkids were here yesterday to visit, and even though it was only 60 degrees, they insisted on going in the water! It was COLD! Even the 4 year old took the plunge!
    Thanks for hosting !

  52. What a wonderful post, thanks so much for sharing. I'm a new follower and found your blog via House at Bluebird Lane. I love going to the beach. Last September while visiting Oregon my friends took me to the beach for the day. I hadn't been to any beaches for a couple of years and the day was wonderful. We stayed to watch the sun set and then went to a nearby restaurant for dinner and watched as the moon reflected on the ocean. Ahhhh, can't wait to go back this year. : ) Hope you get a chance to stop by for a visit.
