Say G'Day Saturday Linky Party {87} ~ Making a 'Contact Me' Button for Your Blog Tutorial

G'day lovely friends! Welcome to this week's Say G'Day Saturday Linky party!

I hope you have had a great week. I've been trying to work on getting my blog back into shape again this week (and over these couple of months!) and even though it has been very time-consuming I have learnt so many things about blogging, HTML, SEO, reaching readers, Google+, Facebook and photo editing. Today I thought I would share another fun thing I have learned which is how I made my new 'Contact Me' Button that you can see over there in my sidebar.

I made a contact me button after redesigning and adding some new social media icons. I wanted everything to look ordered so I have used an even number of icons (8) but that meant that one had to go as I had 9! So, I decided to make a button exclusively for email. Now, I am not an expert AT ALL in this kind of thing but this button actually works for me so I thought I might as well share the code to see if others might find it useful.

There are two ways you can add an image to Blogger blogs that will link to an email address and they both use the Add a Gadget function. The first way is to add an image using the Add An Image function.

1. You first need to choose the JPG image you want to use for your gadget. I made mine using Pic Monkey  and then saved it to my computer. The one on my sidebar is sized 200 x 200.

2. Now go to LAYOUT on your blog's dashboard.

3. Click on ADD A GADGET

4.Choose IMAGE

5. In the TITLE section type in something like “Contact Me” or “E-Mail Me” . You could also leave it blank BUT, if you do want to leave it blank, you will need to add some special code. Ever since the introduction of the new Blogger Template Designer, Blogger doesn't allow you to leave the Title field blank and this applies to any widget/gadget. Use the following code in the Title field:

<h2></h2>

6. In the LINK area, delete the http:// and type in your email address with “mailto:” at the beginning. For example, I would type: mailto:natashainoz.com@gmail.com

7. Now choose the image you want to use by getting it from your pictures on your computer or from the web by copying and pasting an image URL.

8. If the image is large you can click SHRINK TO FIT and SAVE or if you have already re-sized your image whilst at PicMonkey (mine is 200 x200) you don't need to click shrink to fit.

9. Click SAVE.

10. Each time you use the "Add a Gadget" feature in Blogger, your new widget will always appear at the top of your layout above all your other widgets so you will need to drag and drop your new widget to its desired location. On the LAYOUT page, position your new e-mail gadget to wherever you want it in your sidebar.

11. Click SAVE and you are done!

Now, there is another option of adding a custom widget to Blogger using the HTML widget. The HTML and JavaScript widget within Blogger is a blank widget that allows you to add code to your blog.

1. Find "Add a Gadget" from the Blogger LAYOUT screen and click on HTML/JavaScript.

2. Copy the code below and paste it into the CONTENT section. You will see that I have added the code <center> to mine. That is because I wanted the button centered on my sidebar.

3. You will see that there are two sections in red. The first is my email address. You will need to change that to your email address. For example mailto:addyouraddresshere. Make sure you keep the "" marks in the code! Just delete the red section only and replace it with your details.

4. The next part of the code is the URL of the image. The image that I created on PicMonkey is sized at 200 x 200 and I downloaded the image to my PHOTO ALBUM on Google+. You can use any online photo gallery service, such as Photobucket or Flickr to download your images.

5. Now you need to find your image and replace the IMAGE WEB ADDRESS with your new image url. Just right click on the image and choose COPY IMAGE URL. Copy it and then paste it in the same place where my image url is (the second section of red text). Again, Make sure you keep the "" marks in the code!

6. In the TITLE section type in something like “Contact Me” or “E-Mail Me” . You could also leave it blank BUT, if you do want to leave it blank, you will need to add that same special code I mentioned above. Ever since the introduction of the new Blogger Template Designer, Blogger doesn't allow you to leave the Title field blank and this applies to any widget/gadget. Use the following code in the Title field:

<h2></h2>

7. Click SAVE

8. As I said before, each time you use the "Add a Gadget" feature in Blogger, your new widget will always appear at the top of your layout above all your other widgets so you will need to drag and drop your new widget to its desired location. On the LAYOUT page, position your new e-mail gadget to wherever you want it in your sidebar.

9. Click SAVE again and you are done!

If you haven't already tried PicMonkey to edit your photos you really should! It is free to use and the editing tools are excellent.

Some requests:

  • Can we try visiting as many people as possible and leave a really quick comment just to let our friends know that we've visited? You could say something simple like "I'm just stopping by to Say G'day from the Say G'Day Saturday Party. Have a beautiful day and see you again soon!"
  • Follow your fellow blogger somewhere, somehow. I think Google+ is a great place to find new bloggy friends, to find enormous support, build a friendly community and, of course, it will really help build your profile and help with Search Engine Optimization!
  • Please turn of your word verification! I think Blogger have got the whole Spam issue under control these days so perhaps give it a try for week and see how you go.

Please note: by linking up to the Say G'day Party, you are giving me permission to use any part of your post, including pictures, in feature posts on Natasha in Oz. I may also feature your posts on Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest with all credit being given to the original source.

Thanks so much for linking up. I hope you might be able to find some time during the week to pop back and say g'day to a few of the talented bloggers who have shared their posts this week.

I will be joining a few link ups this week. Click the button to find out where I like to party!
