Tuesday Tune: 'Some Nights' by Fun.

G'day from Oz lovely friends! Welcome to this week's Tuesday Tune.

Tuesday Tune: Natasha in Oz

"Some Nights" is an older song (2012 I think) by American indie rock band Fun. I love this song because when I first heard it I loved the beat, I wanted to dance and I thought Nate Ruess the lead singer sounded just like Freddy Mercury!

The song is said to be expressing the existential angst of a young man who is far from home. Ruess explained: "I'm always thinking about, 'Who am I and why did I do something like that?' And I think then it harkens back to my family, and I have such a strong tie to them and it's always therapeutic to sing about them."

When I listened closely and examined the lyrics I saw some swearing and thought Maybe I shouldn't share this with my blogging friends so I decided to ask my son what he thought of it. He loves music, is strong in his faith and appreciates the poetry in song lyrics so I was interested to know what he thought. He thought the song was great because it's catchy but he also liked the question that the group poses, "What do I stand for?" He said yes, the song has a swear word but it is asking people to think about their lives, to question things intelligently and to think through things without rushing into making unwise decisions.

He's a clever boy, my son!

This song really is quite philosophical and I'm so glad it helped promote a discussion with my adolescent son. If you would like to read some other perspectives on this song check out this great post from Doug Fields the founder of Simply Youth Ministry, and read the comments below the post. While you are over at Doug Field's site you might want to check out this fantastic post on 10 actions that kids learn from their parent’s marriage.
